Hi all! Just wanted to mention this: After a long time successfully using JTDX on Linux/Debian Sid for some reason I couldn't connect anymore to my rig FT991A via /dev/ttyUSB1 nor /dev/ttyUSB2. JTDX warned about a protocol error with hamlib. Only after trying with wsjtx I got a hint that it might not be a protocol error but the port might not be accessable.
Hamlib error: IO error port_open: serial_open status=-6 iofunc.c(80):port_open return(-6) rig.c(773):rig_open return(-6) while opening connection to rig
I tried with rigctl:
# rigctl --model=1035 --serial-speed=38400 --rig-file=/dev/ttyUSB1 --ptt-type=RIG --verbose Opened rig model 1035, 'FT-991'
Rig command: X TX Mode: LSB TX Passband: 3000
Rig command: f Frequency: 14231000
and it was OK. But only as root. As a normal user nogo.
So eventually it turned out to be a permission problem with the port. Although my user was already part of the dialout group I had to set permissions on /dev/ttyUSB1 and /dev/ttyUSB2 to allow for all users to read and write. Some upgrade of the operating system during the last few months must have changed that. I can't say which. It took me too long to use my rig so I didn't detect it when exactly this had happened.
The only thing which prompted me to write about this: If it is a permission problem I would rather receive an error message in that behalf instead of receiving a "Protocol Error". That, to me, seems to be misleading.
All the best to you and keep up the godd work. vy 73 de Eike KY4PZ / ZP5CGE
