I have looked through the most current user guide and I see know mention of the the meaning of the window between the "last Tx" and the Rx progress window at the bottom of the window. Mine currently reads WD 5m? also where is the rx sweet spot - adjusting my rf gain has little effect on the scale current I have found about 160 dB is working well for Rx.

What does the "WD 5m" relate too? Your Screen shot says "WD 99m"

WD xm = WatchDog is set for 'x' minutes. So, if you call CQ and no answer, JTDX will give up after 'x' minutes.
Watchdog is set at 'File' 'Settings' 'General' 'TX watchdog timer'
Yours is set for 5 minutes. 5 minutes CQ is pretty long ;-)

Watchdog is not for only CQ calling time, it is time to every same tx message time. Counters should be set and activated for every message type. I even don't remember when last time I has Enable TX taken of by watchdog.

I've had the watchdog expire. Mostly that happens during a pile-up, especially in hound mode. You hear a big DX station or DXpedition, so you turn off "Halt TX if answered" and just set it calling the DX. It runs until the DX answers you or the watchdog goes off. That way you don't have to sit at the computer and get bored, but also it won't run out of control.
